The Situation

Mail Boxes Etc. (MBE) is a well-established national franchise network providing printing, shipping, and business support services.

One new franchise owner had recently joined the network but had never owned a business before.

While they were passionate about delivering great service to customers who walked through the door, they felt uncomfortable with the idea of selling or actively pursuing new business.

They knew growth required more than simply waiting for customers to arrive, but the idea of prospecting and promoting their services felt daunting.

The Challenge

For many business owners — especially those new to running a business — sales can feel intimidating.

In this case, the biggest barriers weren’t operational or technical.

They were psychological.

Key challenges included:

  • A strong fear of sales conversations
  • Lack of confidence in approaching potential clients
  • Limited experience with business development
  • Reliance on walk-in customers rather than proactive growth

Without addressing these issues, the franchise would likely remain limited to reactive sales rather than building a strong pipeline of new customers.

The Approach

Using the From Prospects to Profits Framework

To overcome these barriers, we applied my From Prospects to Profits framework, focusing on building both a structured sales process and the confidence required to use it.

The goal was not to turn the owners into aggressive salespeople.

Instead, it was to help them realise that sales is simply about helping customers solve problems.

By reframing sales as service, the process became far more natural and comfortable.

The Key Improvements

Building Sales Confidence

The first step was helping the owners develop belief in themselves and the value of their business.

Through practical guidance and structured conversations, they began to see sales as an opportunity to help rather than something to avoid.

Creating a Simple Prospecting Approach

We introduced a straightforward and repeatable process for identifying and approaching potential business customers.

This allowed them to move from waiting for enquiries to actively building relationships with local businesses.

Strengthening the Customer Experience

In-store interactions were refined to ensure every customer received a positive and professional experience.

This helped generate repeat business and referrals.

The Results

The transformation was significant.

The franchise owners moved from being hesitant about sales to confidently engaging with both walk-in customers and potential business clients.

As their confidence grew, so did the business.

Their franchise began flourishing, and they were recognised within the national network, winning multiple awards for both service levels and business performance.

The success was a reflection not only of the systems put in place but also of the owners’ willingness to take action.

The Next Stage

With strong confidence and systems now established, the franchise is well positioned to continue growing and expanding its customer base.

The foundations are now in place for long-term success.

Closing Insight

Many business owners believe they struggle with sales because they lack the right words or techniques.

More often, the real challenge is confidence.

When business owners believe in themselves, understand the value they provide, and follow a simple structure, sales becomes a natural extension of helping customers.
